Show delay a student's graduation. Just think of your time in the first lab as a long rotation that beneficially added to your training." I want to thank my wife, Shixian Wang, for being supportive and patient throughout my seven PhD years. We have been married since the beginning of my second PhD year, and have kept loving each other ever since. She has always supported my career and academic dream, and was always by my side when I was down. I am so proud of my wife for obtaining her PharmD degree and an excellent job in May 2016. Thanks to her, I can continue to pursue my academic dream for another three to four years. I want to thank my parents, my twin sister, and my in-laws. My parents have always believed in me. They understood my situation and were supportive of my decision to stay with my research, and not return home to China for six years, or attend my sister's wedding in Australia. Particularly, my mom and my mom-in-law have each stayed in the US to help with all the home duties for more than half a year-even though this kept them away from their spouses in China. Without their physical and mental support, I would not be able to defend now. I want to thank the collaborators on my paper who taught me the importance of teamwork, and all the people who edited my dissertation. I also want to thank all my previous lab mates who mentored me and who I mentored; they made me a better mentor. I want to thank all my committee members, faculty, staff and students for their help. I am grateful to the Graduate Program in Molecular & Cellular Biosciences (PMCB) at OHSU for accepting me in the first place, and the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy for being my warm home especially when I lost a graduate program affiliation after transferring to Utah. I want to thank all my friends who gave me a normal life outside the xii |
