Show 1067 short trips up around the bend in the river about two or two and one- half miles, for prospecting purposes. The launch was brought there for the purpose of handling the barge with coal and it was expected to use it as a tug boat. R. 2540. " Q What difficulty did you have with that launch and the barge in coming around bends in the river? " A Down or up? " Q Let's take up first, and then down. " A Well, if you didn't hit the current just right, and you couldn't always tell just how it was, it would turn you around; on several occasions you would turn clear around and head down river again. " There was only one way to land, that was to go down river until you found a place large enough where you could turn around and head back up. A propeller boat won't steer going astern." R. 2540- 2541. The large boat was not at Lees Ferry when he arrived there and he does not know who brought it in. " Q Where was it when you first saw it? " A You mean the big stern wheeler? " Q Yes. " A Never saw it. " Q I mean the large launch. " A The large launch was brought in from Flagstaff, Arizona, by team." R. 2541. He does not know what became of the large launch because it was there when he quit the service and left. R. 2541. All of the boats were there when he left Lees Ferry. While he was there they also installed a dredge at Lees |
