The purpose of his second excursion to the San Juan River was in the interest of oil operations. R. 2503. " Q Just tell me about those, please. " A There was oil seepages along the river, and a number of people were interested, had claims, and a considerable amount of drilling was done, a little drilling along about 1894, but particularly in about 1905 and 1908 and 1910. " Q Were you in there at all those different times? " A Yes, from 1902 on until 1921 I was there most of the time. " Q Did you do any drilling yourself? " A Yes. " Q At what point did you put down a well? " A Near Mexican Hat. " Q In the river bed? " A No: it is about a mile from the river bed." R. 2504. " THE SPECIAL MASTER: I understood the witness to say there had been a little oil drilling in 1894, 1896, 1898 and 1910. " Then you asked him whether he had been there on each of those occasions. He says, yes after 1902. " What is the meaning of that? " BY MR. BLACKMAR: " Q You meant 1904, didn't you? " A Yes, 1902, 1904 and on; 1892 there was no drilling done; that was placer excitement.
