This is a remarkable showing, considering the fact that no effort has been made to deve10p post-graduate work, but rather the emphasis has been placed on the develOpment of undergraduate work, which indicates that in the near future our attention will have to be directed toward advanced instruction. Undoubtedly, a division for -advanced studies will have to be created, and.an officer of the University Specifically placed in charge of itl MAINTENANCE FUND. A larger maintenance fund is the out- standing need of the University of Utah if its work is to be deve10ped as it should. The purpose of this increased maintenance fund would be to raise salaries of the staff already employed, where found desirable, and also to increase the size of the instructional staff. the salary schedule should be raised so as to bring it more nearly in conformity with the institutions of our size and standing. The hard and fast salary schedule now in effect at the University, especially in so far as it refers to full professors, should be modified in order to make it possible to reward instructors of special merit and industry. This increase in the maintenance fund is further needed to increase the teaching staff. The growth of the University, sepecially the increase in the number of graduate students and upper division students, requires more instructors possessing the qualifications suitable for the rank of full professors. university of Utah, Institutions comparable to the size of the in most instances, have considerably larger teaching staffs than we do. In respect to the maintenance fund, it might be well to make a comparison between two of our neighboring institutions, one to the north and one to the south.
