Show Processing Sectors The first 39 sectors shown in Appendix Table 1 constitute the Processing sectors of the Utah economy. These sectors are grouped under the industry headings of Agriculture; Mining; Construction; Manufacturing; Transportation, Communication and Utilities; Trade; and Service and Miscellaneous. The basic characteristic of these industries is that the production and sales of their constituent economic sectors are directly related to each other. The significance of this relationship is that the production and marketing decisions in the Processing sectors of the economy are truly economic in nature as far as the state's economy is concerned, i. e., the 39 sectors are interrelated with-- and a function of-- the level of Utah economic activity. The meaning of the numbers in the body of Appendix Table 1 can be understood by consideration of the intersection of column 2 and row 1. The number found at this intersection, $ 13,058, indicates that Sector 2, Dairy and Poultry, purchased $ 13,058,000 worth of goods and services from Sector 1, Crops and Others. This amount is an input to the production process of the Dairy and Poultry sector and a sale or output of the Crops and Others sector. Final Demand Sectors The sectors of the economy included under the heading Final Demand in Appendix Table 1 differ from the 39 Processing sectors in that the economic activities of the final demand sectors are not necessarily directly related to the economic climate of Utah. Obvious examples are the two Final Demand sectors associated with Federal Government purchases-- Federal Government Defense and Federal Government Non- defense. It is reasonable to assume, for 67 |
