Show of the overall time allowed by the contract. Diversion of the Green River was expected to start during the fall of 1959. The construction of the residences, streets, utilities, and other facilities of the Flaming Gorge Community (Dutch John, Utah) was completed in February 1959. Completion of a 10-bed hospital, a garage and fire station, a laboratory, and an administrative building were welcome additions as was the establishment of a post office. A temporary 12-ton suspension bridge across the Green River was completed by the State of Utah in May 1959. It cut the distance by road between Dutch John and Vernal, Utah, from 89 to 45 miles. The contract for the first phase of clearing the Flaming Gorge Reservoir, which will have a drainage area of 15,000 square miles, was awarded in June 1959 on a bid of $2,385,000. The contractor started reservoir clearing operations on July 6, 1959. Navajo Unit-New Mexico Despite a brief walkout by equipment operators and breakdowns of concrete batching and placing equipment, an excellent overall rate of progress throughout the year was maintained by the contractor constructing the 405-foot-high earth- and rock-fill dam on the San Juan River in the northwestern part of New Mexico. At June 30, 1959, the physical percentage of work performed to date was 30 percent compared with an elapsed contract time of 20 percent. Diversion of the river through the outlet works is scheduled for the fall of 1959. Paonia Participating Project-Colorado Preliminary construction work on the Paonia project started shortly after the prime contract was awarded to Bud King Construction Co. in January 1959. At June 30, 1959, the contractor had excavation work underway for the spillway, stilling basin, and dam-access road. Good progress was made driving the outlet works tunnel, and in relocating Colorado State Highway 133. The cost of completed project features and other account balances applicable to the original Paonia project (authorized by the Act of June 25, 1947) were taken into the Colorado River storage project accounts during the fiscal year. Extension of this project was authorized by the Colorado River Storage Project Act. Central Utah Participating Project, Vernal Unit-Utah The prime contract for construction of Stanaker Dam was awarded on May 4, 1959, to Morrison-Knudsen Co. Initial construction activities were confined to foundation excavation and placement of the excavated material in the embankment. Good progress was being made at June 94 |
