Show 94 6280 4272 Ella Ross- D A We made it in two row boats and a soow, or barge, I believe you call them. Q Do you recall how the soow was operated? A Yes, it was operated with two, I think sweeps, two lond paddles like oars, only much larger. Q Then you started from Greenriver and went down to Valentine bottom in a soow with the two row boats? A Yes sir. Q Do you recall whether or not your party encountered any difficulties in getting down to Valentine bottom? A Yes. Q Just tell us about that, please. A We started above the bridge, above Greenriver bridge, about a mile above Greenriver bridge, and we commenced to hit bars at the wash, Saleratus wash, I guess they call it that; it is the wash below Greenriver bridge. The row boat s hit them, and the barge hit the bars. Q And how did the men get the boats and the barge off? A The men that was in the barge, they pried,-- some of them, they was able to pry off with the oars or the sweeps; sometimes they would, some of them, get out and have to push, also. Q Did that situation continue pretty generally clear down to Valentine Bottom? |
