Show EDWIN CAN ON " ED" WI D R 22 2 1 NED: Yeah Wasatch Junior near right up where Pr id nt Hinckl y u d t li . [They used] some of his property when they built that school. BEC: Oh, did they? I didn t know that. NED: I was on the missionary committee and he was a member of the committ with Spencer Kimball as the senior Apostle and Tom Monson. And I remember him; they d chat sometimes before the meetings when we were going to assign missionaries, before we started, there was a lot of chit-chat. And I remember Gordon-President Hinckley-saying the Granite School District's wanting to get our property and I remember him saying O.C. England-did you ever know him? He taught at Cyprus. He was an English teacher and then he had been elevated to an administrative job in the district and it was for procurement of sites. He said, "He's been dickering with us and threatens to condemn the property, get condemnation proceedings." And he said, "That scoundrel." And after the meeting I said, "Gordon"-because we were on a firstname basis-! said, "Do you pray for Orville England at night?" He said, "What do you mean?" I said, "Well, don't we pray for our enemies?" He said-this is a true story-he said, "Well, yes. That's part of our doctrine." I said, "I was just wondering there." He's commented to me about that. When Orville England died he spoke at his funeral. BEC: Oh really? NED: Yeah. And he worked that thing out and all that. BEC: And ended up being friends? NED: Who? Oh, Orville? Evidently they were. And he had a great respect for President Hinckley, as everybody does. But, I like to think that I counseled the would-be prophet. BEC: Yeah (laughs). 37 |
