Show EDWIN CANNON "NED" WI D R R 22 2 01 served in World War II. And that was fifty-two years ago and I ve given that a ard v r inc . I give the winner an engraved watch and then his name goes on a plaque that a p rman nt fixture-they've got about three of them now-in the school trophy case and every spring I go down to their awards assembly. It's the oldest award that Jordan has. BEC: That's something. NED: In fact, I do that to three schools: Cyprus, my cousin, Hugh Cannon, who was vice president-they lived out in Hunter and you may know the siblings-Spence, Mary, John, Hugh and Nancy Ann; I guess they're all older than you. Anyway, Hugh was killed not long after he graduated from Cyprus in the second battle of the Philippine Sea. I give an award in Hugh's name to the outstanding male student of Cyprus. And they've really made a big deal out of that and they give them a watch too, and then the school furnishes a nice engraved plaque and then they have in the trophy case that thing. Ann Pierson, a former Cyprus teacher, was giving the outstanding woman of Cyprus High. This is a similar award for the outstanding member of the opposite sex at Cyprus. Then I also give one to Granite, in memory of my cousin, Charles Winder, who was killed over Japan. That's the Charles Winder Award, and it's basically the same. Then when Granger _High started, I wanted to give an award to the outstanding athlete there (although it has nothing to do with the war). And I've been doing that for thirty-five years now, as long as Granger High has been going. Did you have a choice of going to Granger? BEC: Cyprus. We were clearly within the Cyprus boundary. NED: Yeah. So those are things that kind of keep me current on those good guys that passed away. 25 |
