| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

VER: Oh, that's nice. h t n th' t t BOB: Then Melissa and Eric come and talked to him and the only thing i th y 11 d his name wrong. And then they did this. They had it for school or something but th n they had it over at the county fair too. And I just let them take a picture I had and th y copied it and had it enlarged, and then she brought that to him after. And then Jeni ha written one too. And I couldn't find that. I've got it somewhere. Sam's daughter Jeni come and talked to him, and she won a national essay contest with it. VER: Really? BOB: Their assignment was to write about someone they knew who participated in World War II. And she won the national essay contest in her age group. VER: Wow, how old was she? BOB: She was probably about fourteen then, because she's sixteen now. So, it's been a couple of years ago. In fact, we have to chuckle at this because this is her here, and then this is Jeni, and this is Sam's wife's boy, Beau. And they was voted the most popular sophomore in their sophomore class, boy and girl. VER: Oh, my gosh. BOB: And I says, "Shirley, come and hand me this picture. And I said, "Did Beau take 27 |
