| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

Show Bryan Blanthorn in the battle? 2 BRY: Yes. When we were actually in battle, yes. Or when we were actually v n when we were practicing they would send out practice planes for us towing a targ t for us to shoot at and what not. And quite often we'd practice. And that's another thing. See we were to meet another plane, or two, on our way for practice because after we had been in, and we had quite a lot of new recruits come on that needed practice, and what not, and we were to meet certain planes and stuff all the way for practice. VER: And they knew that? BRY: Because we hadn't had a chance after we left there-after we left Mare Island to have any practice like they normally would have done. VER: Right. BRY: And within the next day or two we was to meet. Several different ships, or planes, and whatnot, were supposed to be out there, and we were supposed to do a lot of practicing on the way. But they never seemed to show up. Or, if they did, they didn't find us. We wasn't reported, of course. I think you probably read enough in that book to see just what happened there-that there was a message got off, and all, but they just didn't pay too much attention. And we never knew this for years. We're just finding out a lot of this ourselves through these books that's come out, and people that's really checked into it. VER: Researched. BRY: Well, it was covered up and they didn't release that information for a lot of years. It's just coming out now. 18 |
