| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

Show Bryan Blanthorn 01 BRY: Oh, I don't know until she was ninety-six but she was w 11 up in h r ighti . Marvin Kimber-so Raida says that Marvin Kimber was the last one that she deliv r d. VER: Oh, that would have been about 1935, around there somewhere because he's just a little younger than me. BRY: I guess so. And then, you might say, I've been pretty well a cattle rancher here since. I left a time or two. I went on the railroad for a year back in 1940. It was just when the war started. I was in Lucin and working on the railroad when they hit Pearl Harbor. And then there was a lot of construction going on, and I left the railroad and went into Brigham City and worked on that Bushnell Hospital, and then took a course on aircraft mechanics at night and went down to Hill Field for about two years. But then I wound up back in Grouse Creek. And then I was what they call a selective volunteer into the navy. My number was coming up, and if you went in and volunteered you supposedly got to go into the service you wanted. And my grandfather Blanthom was a sailor, and he'd talk about it, and I thought that's what I wanted to do. So that's how I got into the navy. But I was already married and had three children, and my fourth child was born while I was in boot camp in San Diego. VER: Oh, really? And what year was that that you went in? BRY: In June of 1944, I went through boot camp, and then gunner school in San Diego. And then in November I went onto the ship the US.S. Indianapolis. VER: In November of'44? 3 |
