| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

VER: So you paddled back with this boat or how did you get back? BRY: Yes, yes. VER: You had enough strength to do that? BRY: Well, yeah, as best we could, you know. And it took an hour or so, to get back there to the group. VER: Did it? BRY: But by kind of paddling along with our hands-as I recall there wasn't a paddle in it. There may have been a little paddle of some kind. I'm not sure now. There could have been a little paddle of some kind. But, anyway, we got back. We got back to the group with empty boats. And like I say, there was ten of us in one of them and eight in the other one. That's what the books says was how we got picked up; that there was these two boats with ten in one and eight in the other one.
