| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

VER: So to begin with, Bryan, just tell when you were born and your parents and a little bit about your life. BRY: Well, I was born December 29, 1919 to George Blanthorn and Emma Lucas Blanthorn here in Grouse Creek. And I don't know, I guess about the first thing I can remember in my life is the house burning down when I was two years old. VER: And you do remember that? BRY: And I do remember going out of that house and sitting out in the shed watching that house burn. And they lost practically everything. VER: And where was that home? BRY: It was just half a mile from where I live now. It was right up here where this old drop shed is. VER: On the east side of the road, or the west? BRY: No, it was on the west side of the road down a little south of where the old shed is, still is. It's where the old rock shed still is. VER: Oh, I see. That was your folks only home, or had someone lived there previously? BRY: Well, that I can't tell you. Well, I'm supposing my grandmother and her first husband, which was a Simpson, lived there. But I'm not sure of that. But my grandmother Blanthorn was married to a Simpson first and had a family. I think probably that was their home. And then he died, and she went to Salt Lake and took a nursing course. And there's where she met George Blanthorn. And then they were married, and 1 |
