| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

Show Bryan Blanthorn 2 VER: Amazing. BRY: Yes, it is. And as soon as I got out of the hospital- well, I wa in th hospital in Guam. We all were. We all were in the hospital in Guam when they dropped the atomic bomb, and the war was (interruption in the tape). VER: Okay. WIFE: What I was going to tell you before you started that was also what happened. And when we got there to the last reunion they were thinking of making this movie, and the reunion was working with one company, and this kid's mother and father sold his rights to another company. And they've been having a----?---- over that because they don't figure at this point if anybody makes movies, or makes money off of that-now like this book, this guy, so much of the royalties from this book goes back to the survivors' reunion. And these parents is just trying to make money off of what ... VER: Interesting. But he's the boy that got more going in Washington? WIFE: Well, he's done a lot; a lot of things. VER: Well, now, you were talking about when you were in the hospital in Guam. I think you said something about-I'm sorry we had to be interrupted. BRY: Well, like I say, we were in the hospital in Guam, all of us, when the atomic bomb was dropped which, you might say, ended the war. So then, as soon as I got back to the states, and of course, I was even needing a hospital after I got back here for quite awhile, in the hospital in California. And then they sent me to Clearfield to be released. Anyone like me because I had four children and all, why they was releasing out of the service ' 19 |
