| Abstract |
Bryan Blanthorn (b. 1919) of Grouse Creek, Utah, enlisted in June of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Indianapolis in November of that year. He was a gunner and saw action at Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He describes the torpedo attack and sinking of the Indianapolis, being in the water, experiences with sharks, the rescue, and being in the hospital in Guam. A second interview with Bryan and his wife, Bobbie, contains more details about the incident, his being picked up by the Ralph Talbot, and an Indianapolis reunion. 54 and 29 pages. |

BOB: But this is the original from the government to him. VER: The Congress of the United States, huh? BOB: Yes, uh huh. n th VER: My goodness. Well, you've got quite a story. I'm so glad I came and talked to you. But you should really. They should have a fireside and he should tell his story so everybody knows all the details. It's so interesting. 11 BOB: And then I got this book in '95, and it tells about the ship a lot of things about the ship. And then it also has got some things in the back of it here that tells about different people, you know, that was on it, and all of that kind of good stuff. Then they give him one of these. We get one of these at every reunion, and this was at the '99 one. And they're updating this. They want to know if we've had any changes because they're updating it, so we will get another one. VER: Oh, it's a directory, huh? BOB: Yeah. And then it lists the deceased ones; the deceased survivors, the ones that have died since. Then these are missing, addresses unknown, that they've never been able to find. They don't know if they're dead or alive. And then this is the US.S. Indianapolis survivors by state. No in here it will tell you by state. 22 |
