Show SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH SCIENCES UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH ABSTRACTS I SeayeupOh Alan Light RonHughen 128 EFFECT SENSORY MUSCLE FATIGUE: CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AND FIBROMYALGIA SYNDROME FROM DRGS IN MICE Seayeup Oh (Alan Light, Ron Hughen) Department of Anesthesiology University of Utah Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) are characterized by physiological and psychological symptoms, and are conditions for which there are no good treatments. From studying metabolites it was found that combinations of metabolites activate the molecular receptors believed to be involved with pain and fatigue response. These molecular receptors are believed dysregulated in some way in people suffering from FMS and/or CFS.to study these molecular receptors the light lab uses cultured dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons from mice exposing the cells to different combination of metabolites (ATP, Lactate, and Protons) to understand how the receptors should function normally. The lab also looks at the same receptors in human white blood cells. Study subjects with FMS and/or CFS are analyzed using realtime, quantitative PCR (qPCR) to understand how the receptors function differently compared to normal, healthy study subjects (control subjects). It is possible that understanding h o w various receptors are involved in FMS and CFS may lead to n e w drugs that target the receptors thus leading to more effective treatments. |
