Fletcher President University of Utah *- Dear Mr. President: 'This is a formal note whereby I have the honor to submit the name of the well-known scholar, writer and oil magnate Wendell Phillips for an Honorary Degree by our University. Dr. Wendell Phillips is internationally recognized as an archaeologist and explorer.yhUnder the University of California and the Foundation for zhe Study of Man, he led an expedition from Cairo to -fcBe- Cape Town throughout the darkest African wilderness. Then under the Johns Hopkins University, he conducted another archaeological expedition to the buried ruins of the city of the Queen of Sheba at Mareb in Yemen. His discoveries on that site and the archaeological statuaryjmd other objects are assembled in ^_ey^raLJmll^a±_the_said University I Tseiiame acquain^M'l^ the Mt. Sinai SxpeditionTSr microfilm-™ ing the priceless manuscript treasures of the Monastery of St. Catherine. We collaborated together in that expedition under the auspices of the Library of Congress which owed the realization of that historic event to Dr. Phillips1 leadership, imagination and dynamism. Dr. Phillips' published works on history, archaeology and anthropology include a classic on Oman where he is personal consultant to its Sultan and another on Qataban and his Queen of Sheba excavations. In recognition of his contributions, he was granted the title of Professor of Archaeology by the University of Wyoming - honoris causa of course since he is really one of the busiest oil magnates in the world. He has already been a recipient of many honorary doctorates from VarJgW:*- C Otttrtrittt»» £-£<K/"uUL U/yvAv-t/uiA fcA) (nH^ °J~ £-<n»-l O^^A cni-Z^C^U) As a youth, I remember that he was selected in his early career as the Xoung Man of the year by the editors of TBE. Since then he has risen to the rank of an oil billionnaire with vast concessions in North Africa, South East Arabia, Indonesia, Korea and elsewhere. Nevertheless, his fabulous wealth has never deflected his mind from his literary .and academic interests. I know that he is now carving time of his busy schedule £& writfcag- a book on As&^ted^io^^ ^VOi ^^ ^Wv^-4^ n^T'^'^j Jjh^ lagfc-latgwiationa] O^ngr^ff? of Orientalists a few years ago on~his 'excavations and"dlscoverTes'^with^great eloquence, and I am sure that he will be happy to J^|^a4^-thxs''and~many- other -speeches- at our University. Wendell Phillips is indeed an eminent speaker and one of the great personalities of our time. The last paragraph of a recent letter from him, of which a Xerox copy is enclosed, indicates his willingness to come and yfe£&Z2&b our University; and a combination of speaking and conferment of an honorary degree is worthy of every consideration in the case of so eminent a personality. Cordially yours Enclosure Aziz S. Atiya |
