Show - i f I, • . " ' • * ••• *: '/ a Ik Sharia Wadi el-Nil "2-%L Maadi - Cairo. Egypt December 20, 1953 dear Wendell. I cannot let this Yuletide pass without sending you these few lines to wish you a merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. I trust that my letter will reach you in time to convey our wish, I am sorry I could not give you so much of my time while you were last in Cairo. The adverse circumstances which prevailed with us while you were here are beginning to clear up though my brother is still in Hospital. When I enquired at the Carlton the last time, I was told that you had left the preceding night. When I contacted Dr. Abou Zaid, I understood that you were given the required letter, though it did not cover the area that I wanted for you. As you will remember, I gave you sufficient notice and urged you to come to Cairo at once, but evidently you could not leave South Arabia at the time. I hope, however, that you will be able to promote some useful project somewhere in the free areas. Colorado and the others have come here t© conclude the terms of the exploratory work in the Western Desert. Please let me know the result of your negotiations in America and how much prospect there is of any positive progress. I As far as I am concerned, I think that in a few days I shall be a completely free man with my retiring decision from January 19!>W. I do so without regret or remorse irrespective of the Los Angeles offer which has sunk into deep silence. I should very much appreciate it if vou could find out some details about the reason why this curious and mysterious behaviour. There are negotiations on other fronts, but I am not hurrying anynof them. I am not anxious to jump into anything which might be a source of annoyance at a later date. Meanwhile, I shall have plenty to do at this end for some considerable time. If you ses Professor Albright, olease convey my kindest regards to him and tell him that I am anxious to see him in agypt whenever he is on his way east. I would like to consult with him on sone aspects of my work and the present developments in my career. What is the fate of my volume on the Arabic Microfilms of Mt. Sinai? It is nearly three years since I handed the book to the Library of Congress for publication, and it is a pity that it should remain idle much too long. Please let me know of any further developments in this connection and try to see it in the Dress before you leave America next time. With ny very best wishes. Most sincerely, Aziz S. Atiya. |
