Show 7'7 W IV Sharia Wadi el-Nil' Maadi - Ceiro, Sgvat July i&t 1J53 ' I-$r dear Wendells When I received your cable from Bew York in reply to mine sent to you in Italy, I really and candidly felt relieved since that oil business was dragging on longer than I had visualized* Though I worked bery hard at it and held endless conferences on it with Dr, Abu-Zald and the Minister himself. and though no final answer was received from Western Pacific, the matter was kept pending for a further period until their representative reached Cairo from London. In my last meeting with the Minister, he seemed to be favourable towards giving Western Pacific a chance for one year and then pass on certain areas to other organizations where you come in. He wants you to write to him and send him a cony of your contract and conditions with the Sultan for study and consideration. This you can ^either^cd directly or through me, that Is, if you prefer. >fy own feeling is that Western Pacific can never explore more than a small fraction of the vast free areas, and perhaps when going through Egypt In September the situation becomes clearer and something may be done. At present, I have done my utmost tc prepare the ground, but this is about all. In the University, there Is another tale to tell. Ify memorandum to the President about the honorary degrees was forwarded tc the Minister who conferred with the Rector Mohammed Awad without any results. I insisted that honours should be declared at the Microfilm presentation ceremony and I even threateded resignation if the university fo&llshly overlooked my recommendations. The ceremony took place and the Ambassador mentioned your name in his ppeechj but neither your name m>& mine was mentioned by Awad, and no ward was said about the honorary degrees. This has left me no choice but to resign in protest, and I have already done this without regret. Mow I am trying to plan my future activities either at home or perhaps In America. The prospect at &alifornia~Los Angeles Is still the most attractive and perhaps also the strongest, though no- . thing as yet is certain. The persons with whom my negotiations are being held include Dr, Vera 0, Xnudson Dean of the Graduate School and Dr. Paul A. Dodd Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The project is the establishment of a Chair of Hear Eastern Studies at California-Los Angeles, We have already discussed details and the matter is now at the stage of Budgetary appropriation. Hhzae are the two rather urgent end important Items en which I feel compelled to write you aJ: onee. A little later I shall write again at greater length on a multitude of other standing subjects together with press cuttings and tie Wendell Phillips Dodge testimonial. 'For the present, I have to close with my warmest greetings and with every good wMio*ss ht. siWnrcietree lwyh,en ever you can. Aziz S. Atiya |
