Show Ik Sharia Wadi el-Nil Maadi - Cairo. Egypt January W, 195^ Dear Wendell: Your letter of December 16 together with your mother's very nice letter of Dec. 6 arrived here some time after i had sent you mine dated December 20, 1953. Evidently our letters crossed and, at any rate, it gives me pleasure to write you again. In the meantime, I am sending another letter by the same mail to Mrs* Sunshine Phillips to explain to her thQt 1 have started working on the fulfilment of all her requirements and trust that X shall be able to bring together all the collections she desires in the near future* I was made to understand that it night be risky to send these by the ordinary mail since stamp collections are subject to some complicated kind of censorship. 1 therefore decided to"go on preparing them and wait a little until you come back to Cairo next time when I can hand them over to you to take back home. How let me send you my most cordial congratulations for your election Young Man of the Year. Knowing yon as I do, I have no doubt that they are justified in their selection, and I hope that one day you will also be elected the centenarian of the year though this will be in the 21st. century when I shall be no more. I nope that 195^ will be another prosperous year for you and that I shall soon hear further more concrete news about the pr !9 of the oil negotiations from you. Ccnorado are still on the track of the western desert. On second thoughts, I hava a feeling th*t the western desert is vory largely uncertain except for drowning too much capital before the results can show up. The eastern desert and Sinai are likely to yield oil In a shorter time and with much less capital. About myself, my retirement from the Egyptian University has become effective as from the first of January. I have already received several farewell letters of appreciation from the various administrations, In other words, I am now a free man, free to do what I like and reject waat I dislike. For the time being, I am preparing to deal with my leterary arrears. I should like to finish a few volumes in the course of the first year of ny retirement. Afterwards, I do not mind combining some academic activities in America or elsewhere with my own writings. I shall look forward to knowing from you what was happening behind the scene at California (Los Angeles) and why all this ail race after all that enthusiasm. Ay brother has recovered and he Is back home. He may go back to his vera in the next week or two. Thank yon for asking about him. Please do not forget to dc : thing about my Microfilm volume since its publication has been Wo long overdue, and 1 keep getting enquiries about it - the last from Chicago. Ana when do I expect to see you in Cairo next? Until then, I send my New Year's greetings with every good wish. Sincerely, Az z 3. Atiya |
