Show plate during development, or else an impression of something visible only by ultra violet radiation. On the horrific Folio 13 the reverse is the case. A finger print which appears to have arisen from the painted outline of the sacrificial stone is not shown on the plate, though it is apparent quite clearly on a photograph made about 1948. On our Dorsal side of the Codex the photographer has given a series of page numbers beginning with 1 on our Folio 23 D, and extending to 22 which is equivalent to our fol. 2 D. The tonal quality of this edition with very dark shadows on the red, orange and yellow section, has led to a loss of definition where details are obscured in the general darkness. An extraordinary occurrence due to following the pagination of Paso y Troncoso which read from right to left and placing it in a paged book of Western type with the numbers reading from left to right, has resulted in each opening of two adjacent pages having the true page positions reversed. The pages actually join together in the middle, not at the middle of the double page spread as in the book, but at the two outer edges of the double page. This is an unfortunate accident which mars an otherwise commendable edition containing an excellent compendium of published information. Monochrome reproductions of seven pictures from Codex Laud occur in Nowotny: Tlacuillolli, Berlin, 1961. These are good modern reproductions from Panchromatic negatives. Each is accompanied by a diagrammatic commentary. The numeration of the pages in Laud follows a system which is not quite clear, but in the context of the book it is not of great importance. For the convenience of readers the following list gives details: Nowotny Plate No. Nowotny Laud Page.
