Show some traditional information when he acquired the document which enabled him to determine the correct starting point. Folios 2D to 9D inclusive are single-picture pages which show some special aspects of death. The time counts are interwoven in a complex way. Basically an initial day named in the bottom row, is followed by a number of days denoted by circles in the upper part of the page, which lead the count on to an initial day in the bottom row of the next page.…3b Folios 10 D to 15 D inclusive contain a series of pictures associated with numbers, found in Codices Borgia, and Vaticanus 3773. In Laud the series begins with the numeral 2 in the lower right quarter of Fol. 10 D proceeds to 13 on the lower left quarter of Fol. 10 D, proceeds to 13 on the lower left quarter of Fol. 15 D, rises to 14 on the upper left quarter of Fol. 15 D, and reaches its conclusion with 26 on the upper right quarter of Fol. 10 D. Folios 16 D to 21 D have separate series of pictures in their upper and lower registers. In the upper register of Folios 16 D to 19 D inclusive we find a numerical series associated with the four aspects of the Lady Tlazolteotl. This commences with the day-sign Cipactli, then the count passes through the twelve circles at the top of the page (note the twelfth circle in front of the triple circle on the headdress of the goodess), and comes to an initial day sign on the next page. On each page there are five initial day signs and twelve-day distance numbers. Thus these pages are linked with the 20 periods of 13 days in the Tonalpouhalli. The upper register on Folios 20 D and 21 D has a numerical count beginning with Ocelotl in the upper right quadrant of Fol. 20 D, and follows through the circles and on to the day sign in the next quadrant. When the count of days in the five pictures in this series is completed, it returns and recommences with the day Miquiztli. Although the following four pictures do not specify the day signs of the second repetition of the count there can be little doubt that the series is continuously recurring and each count of the sequence of 52 days will commence with one of the five initial days on Fol. 20 D right, thus making a total count of 260 days, a completed Tonalpouhalli. |
