Codices from 15th and 16th century Mexico. These Mesoamerican manuscripts described wars, victories, famine, pestilence, religious events, and other elements of ancient Mesoamerican culture. The codices often consisted of one long extension or band of paper called amatl, produced from the bark of a type of fig tree. Glyphs, or pictorial representations, were used for the text. |

Codex Mexicanus caractere Hieroglyphico perquam scriptus. This is the catalogue reference to the document which is described in the following pages. Since it was presented to the Bodleian Library by Archbishop Laud it has been preserved in excellent condition, as the reproduction herewith will testify. During its long stay in England, over three centuries, it has been a fascinating subject of study for a succession of scholars. It has brought them little fortune, but in many ways its beauty has been a reward for those who have worked with it. It has a message which is largely to instruct in the meaning of the religion of the ancient Mexicans. In editing this facsimile edition we have at last an opportunty of presenting a beautiful document to the scholars of the world. In so doing we would like to dedicate it to the memory of its first recorded owner Archbishop William Laud, who by presenting his great library of rare and precious manuscripts to Bodley's Library benefited the students of all succeeding generations. |
