Brors. Geo. A. Smith, W. Woodruff Jos. Young Senr. & Editor heavy, large politics talked of. Bror. Jos. Y. reports favorably of the north, visited all the settlements f[ro]m this City to N. Ogden, a good spirit prevails, great gratitude to the Lord for rain, and the good spirit & prospect of good crops. The Presidency returned a little after 6 o.C.- message from Jas C Snow today Provo, stating that the Indians there were hostile, stolen 3 horses, Arrapeen & bror. suspected as leading, tho' Arrapeen pretends the Indians will not hear him.l' prol)lcrns with the local populaceome of whom feared the property they were squatting on vvoulcl be removed from them once the land was surveyed. Burr \vas charged with fraudulence and was removed by Secretary of Interior Jacob Thompson fat malfeasance. Normon F. Furniss in The Mormon Conflict 1850- 1859 (PGcvv Haven: Yale University Press, 1960), gives a good account of the Burr episode, pp. 45-46, 65, 213.
