Description Tuesday 25 Attended to usual duties of the office during the morning, amongst the callers were Elders J Taylor D H Wells ect. This afternoon the case of D Spencer Cyrus H Wheelock, Jno Vancott, and others vs. Daniel W Jones, were heard. The case related to goods left by the emigration at the Devils Gate, last winter. (for decision, See Church letter book No 3 page 805.)" This evening my Sons Jos. A Brigham Jr. and John W. Also Stephen Taylor returned from an exploration of city creek kanyon, reported favor- ably of the kanyon as a good place to cache grain, or women&children." Rode out this afternoon and evrning "GJohn Van Cott \vas the father-in-la\\ to Ix of Brigham Young. Mary Van Cott married Bli!qhanl on January 8, 1865 The othrr mm, Daniel Spencer and Cytxls H. Whrelock, as well as \`an Cott, apparently were forced to leave their aoodq in the care of Daniel \Y. Jones and tlventy-six other mm trapped at Devil's Gate during the \\intet of 1856-.57. The tlapped men barely escaped an ordeal of hrmgcr 3~1th as that \Ihic h hcfcll the Donner Party ten years previous. Apparently hecause yevera cattle had perished dulinq the harsh winter and some provisions had been apptoprlated to ~~111 the stranded nlcn through thr winter, the oI%ncrs were tryinq to claim some redress against Daniel Jones. See footnote 3. The claims aqainst Jones lverc denied, and the council hrar- ing the care said he acted honorably and accounted for all goods. "IIc is entitled to praise, confidrncc and reqprct" was the drri- sion of Brigham Young, Heher C. This was his lxrsonal domain; entry to it \vas gained only by a special pass issurd by Brigham. Hr levied a fee upon anyone taking out timber or stone, hut fol this he did maintain the road.
