Smith went up with Prest Y. to `Dr. John M. Bemhiwl was Utah'\ ablr delegate to Congrw, haLring been filet rlected in 1851, again in 1853, 185.5, and 1857. He had just lctulnrd from \Vashinqton \vith considerahlr news to report to Governor Brigham Young. George A. Smith, chutch historian and later counselor to P~csident Brigham Young-, l<aq also returning from \Yachinqton 1, hcrc he had been carrying out a special assignment of presenting to ConqreJs a petition and the Constitution of the State of Dewrrt that had bwn adopted by a state convention in Malch 1856. While in Washington, Smith ( ontactrd old acqllaintances and friends to enlist their support. Genclal John C. Frtmont had come out against polygamy in his Republican presidential bid of 1856, and because of the furor, Strphen i\. I>ouqlas adviwd Smith not to prrsent his petition at this time. Bcrnhi5el alw counseled Smith against its presentation. Smith left \\`ashington, January 30, 1857, and Limited church qoups in thr East until he left Leavenworth on May 2, lS?T. EIr arrived in Salt Lake on May 29, reporting that he had "traveled ten thousand miles" in the months he was qone. On Smith and Bernhisel's home\\ard journey they met the seventy Mormon missionaries sent eastward in April to prove that handcart travel was not a mistake a$ many chargrd after the disaster of th e previous October and November. Thr missionaliey completed their journey to Florence, Nebraska, in forty and one- half days traveling time-averaging tlq ent)-seven miles per day but some days rjalking thirty-five nliles.
