Show THE NEW TERRITORIES. The boundaries of the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas are thus laid .t,o wn in the late act of Congress: "All that part of the Territory of the United States included within the following limits, except euch portions thereof as are hereafter expressly exempted from the operations of this act, to wit: Beginning at a point in the l\1issouri river where the 40th parallel of north lati .. tude crosses the same ; thence west on said parallel to the summit of the highlands separating the waters flow .. ing into the Green river, or Colorado of the 'Vest, from the waters flowing into the Great Basin; thence north .. ward of the said highlands to the summit of the Rocky l\fountains ; thence on said summit north ward to the 49th parallel of north latitude; thence east on said parallel to the western boundary of the Territory of 1\finnesota ; thence southward on said boundary to the 1\tlissouri river; thence down the main channel of said river to the place of beginning, be and the same is hereby created into a temporary Government by the name of the Territory of Nebraska." It will be seen that Kansas covers from south to .north three degre~s of latitude and Nebraska nine degrees. |
