By the construction of this road, Philadelphia woulr1 110t only he brought nearer to the northern counties of her own State, but v:ould draw off much of the trade and travel from Western New York, Canada West, and the North-Western States, which now go in other directions. The distance from Philadelphia to Buffalo, via !'ottsville, Williamsport, and Elmira, (and, also, via the Attica and. Horn e ll ~ville R. R., which will be opened for travel before the road In questiOn could he built) would he 391 miles, and to Niagara Falls, 413 miles. These place's are distant fr~m Philad~Iphia, via .Ne_w Yo1·k City, the Erie, and .flttica and Ilornellsvzlle R. R., <>11 and 533 m1les. It would not be so advantageous to Philadelphia to construct a line up the Susquehanna, from the Central R. R. at Harrisburg, as it would be to the city of Baltimore. The Pottsvi lie route for Philadelphia is undoubtedly the best, as it is nearer, and the trade over it cou ld not be so well diverted as by the Susquehanna route. Baltimore has a connection with the Central road at Harrisburg, and if the Susquehanna route w~s adopted, ~he trade would naturally flow through that channel to Baltimore. It Will, therefore be to the interest of the Baltimoreans to construct that route.
