Chic changed his position, resting his arms on his knees so he was looking right in JD's face. He felt his own heart beat increase. He wished he'd had time to prepare for this. He hardly knew where to start, but his next clue came from JD himself whose face was suddenly agitated. "No . . . I don't want to," JD said, startling Chic. "What don't you want to do?" "Go back on the mountain," JD answered, his voice sounding strange, unnatural. "Yes, JD. I want you to go back to the night on Skull Mountain. You'll recall everything. Remembering it won't hurt you. Let's go back to that Saturday night-" JD's face worked. "No! I'm afraid." "You won't be hurt. Honest. You'll be okay. I just want you to remember everything that happened. You're there now, and Stephanie's trying to wake you up. What's she saying?" "She's shaking me," JD said finally in a peculiar thick voice. "Is it time to get up?" Chic asked. "I think it's time to get up and I've overslept. The elk are starting to move." "What's Stephanie saying?" "She sounds scared. Real scared and she keeps saying 'Oh, God! Oh, God!' and I don't know what's wrong with her." "Are you getting up now?" "Yes, I'm out of the lean-to and everything's red. It's on fire!" Suddenly JD's mouth contorted. His body jerked like he felt an actual electric shock. "What is it?" "I don't know. It's terrible! I'm pulling Stephanie out to see.
