Show 16. At first every rock or stump picked up by her light was JD. Her heart leaped a dozen times. Then, scouring the far part of the clearing, she felt the panic return. Why didn't he answer? If he were there, he'd answer. If he hadh't been hurt . . . or worse. She kept calling his name, but her throat was so tight she hardly knew her own sounds. The possibility of never seeing him again was working at her, but she couldn't stop to think about it. Stumbling on, with more anxiety than she could handle, she almost missed the dark shape that caught on her light about fifty yards ahead. Instinctively, she stopped. She steadied the flashlight and brought it slowly back until she could make out a form on the ground. It had to be JD! "He's here! Over here! I found him!" she called. Then she ran, choking back sobs of relief, saying mindless frantic prayers that he'd be all right. Soon she could see his orange parka and then the white of his hands and face. He was moving! He raised up, then lay back again. "JD, are you all right?" she cried, inspecting him with her light, then kneeling to help him sit up. "What happened? I couldn't find you." "I don't know," JD answered, sounding weak. He looked behind him. "It's gone." Then he turned to see the lights bobbing through the dark toward them. He grabbed Stephanie with hands as cold as ice. "Oh, God, they're coming!" "It's okay, JD. It's the people in that camper, remember? They came to help find you." "Oh," he moaned. He lay back and covered his face with both hands. "Is he okay?" the woman asked as she came puffing up to them, closely followed by her husband. "I don't know," Stephanie answered. "I think he's kind of stunned. Can you get up, JD?" Together they helped him to his feet, then with Clarence and Stephanie steadying him on either side, they made their way back to the campsite. Almost there, JD began a violent shaking. "I'm freezing," he chattered. She could feel him shivering right through his parka. Ruth hurried ahead. "You climb right on in," she said when they got to the camper. "It's nice and warm in there and Clarence can turn up the flame." She opened the door and held it for JD. Finally inside, |
