Show 75. on the Air Force or Washington to find the truth about UFO's, Charlie." "You think so?" Mr. Evans smiled as they stood, clapping the doctor good naturedly on the shoulder. JD could see the conversation was going to go on through dinner. He didn't know if he could eat. Then they seated Gayle next to him. Normally he would have laughed when she bent close and whispered, "Remember to drop your fork," but he didn't find her remark very funny now. He .ignored what she said, pretending to be busy with his napkin. Somehow JD got through the clear soup and the salad, listening to Tom Gordon tell a story about a guest on his talk show who claimed she and her ailing mother had seen a UFO. "You couldn' t shake her," he laughed, "All these people called in-one was an astronomer at the college -but she stuck to her story. She'd taken her mother from the nursing home for a ride and they'd watched this thing for ten minutes, in broad daylight, on the back side of Casper Mountain." "Did you ever have her mother on the air?" Dr. Burke asked. "No, I was afraid she might croak right there in the studio, she was so old." Gayle giggled. "And no one else saw anything?" Mrs. Burke asked. "Not that we knew of then. About a month later, a scruffy looking sheepherder stopped by the radio station. He'd been scared to death by a flying saucer swooping over his animals, but he'd forgotten what day it happened. And even though his wagon was on that same south slope, we were never able to confirm anything." By the time Mrs. Evans brought in the roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, the men had got off onto local politics, a subject close to the hearts and purse-strings of all councilmen-..like Charlie Evans. When the two women started talking together, JD breathed easier. That left Gayle and him to have their own conversation, but for once they didn't seem to have anything to say. JD ate his roast beef in silence. He may have finished dinner without saying a word, but suddenly there was a noisy clattering on the terrazo floor. He laughed out loud in spite of himself. He had just knocked his fork off the edge of the table! |
