Show 95. Once outside, Gayle chided him. "You really are unpredictable!" She took the hand he offered. "I was planning to make popcorn, hot, buttery popcorn, the way you like it." "Oh, we'll stop for something later. Look at that sky, Gayle. Who could stay in on a night like this?" "Me, for one," she shivered. "I don't believe it. Tonight was made for lovers!" "Oh, wow!" She made a face as he helped her into the VW. "Besides," JD said as he swung into the driver's seat, "I need to talk to you and I'd rather do it in private than there at the listening post." "JD!" "Come on, Gayle. You know how it is." "Do you think my folks stand around to hear every word we say to each other?" "No, you know I don't think that. But I want to be alone with you once in awhile, okay? C'mon! Squeeze out a smile." She obliged. "I got a long dress for the Christmas dance today," she smiled again, a bonus. "It's really--" "Sexy?" "Are you kidding? Mother helped me pick it out. But it fits . . . clings! Is that better? It's red, JD, bright red velvet." "I suppose I'll have to shine my shoes if you're going to all that trouble," he teased. "Swell! Don't forget it." "I'll miss you, Gayle," JD said abruptly- "Do you know we haven't been separated for almost a year - except for a few weekends?" "I know." "How long will you be gone?" "Two weeks anyhow. Can you believe all that sun? Swimming every day? Shopping and lunch? I might even try to play some tennis. My cousin's promised to give a party for me, too." "With guys?" JD felt his stomach twitch. "Would you care?" "You know I would." |
