Show 13. "From space?" she whispered desperately, still clinging to his parka. "I don't know," he shook her off his arm and raised up on his knees. "God, how do I know?" They huddled together for several more minutes watching the thing gently lower itself on the far side of the clearing. "What else could it be?" Stephanie's mind raced for explanations. "Will you stay here and not move?" JD broke in. "I'm going to get a picture of it." "Oh no, JD. Please don't go! I'm scared. I can't stand it!" "Steph, look," he grabbed her face between his hands. "Nothing's going to happen. It's just sitting out there. I'll get a picture and come right back." He was talking fast. "Now stay here. You'll be all right." "No, JD," she started to cry. "Look at my hands," he held them out for her to see. "I'm as scared as you, but I've gotta get a picture. Don't you understand? We may be the only ones to see this. Just wait here. You're safe!" Stephanie held onto his legs, but he was up and away from her before she could stop him. Wiping her face on one sleeve and then the other, she tried to swallow back the sobs that kept coming. Clumsily, she pulled on her heavy shoes, but her hands shook so she could hardly tie the laces. When she looked again she could see JD's silhouette. He had his camera and was crouching behind the car. Then he was running, and ducking down, then running again toward the thing. Why was he going so close? He was too close! Afraid to call out, she bit down hard on her fist, fighting back the tears that blurred everything into a red, throbbing mass in front of her. Suddenly, she was aware of the low humming sound she'd heard in her dream. How long had that . . . that UFO been watching them? Wiping her eyes with both hands, she scrambled to her feet, trying to keep track of JD. He must be down. She couldn't see him. "JD," she screamed. She couldn't help it. Where was he? She couldn't see him anywhere, though the light still illuminated every blade of grass in the clearing. "JD!" she yelled again, ready to explode. |
