Show U. of U. Chronicle Year Book99JUbteto of Jf ootfiaU EastonBy Coach Joseph H. Maddock.TUDENTSat the University and local lovers of football can look back with a feeling of pride over the' record of the past season. We have only one "if" to regret, and taking everything into consideration, it is doubtful if that is a legitimate one. When the University met Boulder our boys were not prepared, and defeat was the inevitable. It is, however, the general belief of critics, and it is borne out by facts, that Utah developed greatly after this game while the Colorado team remained almost stationary. It is the honest belief of the writer that at a later period Utah could have won from Boulder. This only proves that the Utah boys i are willing" to be taught, are persistent workers and have the proper fighting spirit for the gridiron. The men on the squad were men of ability, full of manly courage and determination and imbued with the true Utah spirit. The work was of necessity hard, harder than any Utah team ever experienced, yet because of the mental attitude of the men the most difficult work was full of pleasure. The game with the heavy team from Logan was one of the prettiest contests ever seen in Salt Lake City. At no time was the contest in doubt, and the score of 43 to o fairly represented the relative merits of the teams. It won for University the state championship, which we earnestly hope it will never again lose. The Colorado College game on Thanksgiving day was a fitting climax to a successful season-. The Utah team here showed as the finished product. The style of play and the rapidity with which the plays were executed proved a mystery to the Colorado men, as is revealed by the final score of 43 to o.With the poorest prospects and in the face of the greatest obstacles to achieve the success she did, Utah may well look back to the season of 1904 as one of the most brilliant, if not the most brilliant in her football history. |
