Show U. of U. Chronicle Year Book67 g>tubentHE ONE hour in the college week when all students lay aside their work, and meet together to hear of the philosophy of life, or to discuss student affairs, as the case may be, is Chapel hour, on Wednesday, at n a. m. If you wish to see the official student body, you will find such only at this hour, unless you happen to be at a football game, or at a rally. During the past year our Chapel exercises have been characterized by new life and vigor, because the students have taken more interest than heretofore, in what was going on about them. The student body is developing, expanding, and the loyalty to his Alma Mater, which every live college man has in his heart, is showing itself more and more in the students of our University. In previous years, the Preps, attended student body meetings. Objection being raised to their presence, it was decided to have separate chapel meetings. But the decision was never carried out, for the Preps, ceased making themselves conspicuous. No one can now say that our college men are not receiving the respect due them from preparatory students. The student body has taken greater interest in singing and the giving of college yells. At the beginning of the year, much "of the yelling was done by the Engineers, because they were more united than the other colleges; but as the year has advanced, the Arts and Normals have come forward to do their share of cheering. This is more apparent to an outsider than to ourselves, as students. Now, a house divided against itself, we are told, will fall. And continual strife causes a rupture that is often too great to be healed. I only trust that as our University grows, we will broaden our view of its departments, and love for our own college will take the place of jealousy or hate for the college of another.Among the many occasions which the student body has cause to remember, may be mentioned the night when we celebrated the return of our football team, victorious over Denver and Wyoming. In fact, during football season, the student body was at the height of its enthusiasm. The visit of the Legislature saw more students together than at any other meeting, outside of athletic rallies, during the year. The Engineers brought down the wrath of the other colleges at the meeting by being too much in evidence. There have been numerous interesting addresses made during the year, and elevating strains of music have added to the enjoyment of Chapel hour,-all of which is, after all, but a part of the education we are here to acquire. The new Constitution adopted at the meeting, on May 3d, binds the students into a solid body, where college activities are centralized, and |
