Show 136 She couldn't look at him. She didn't want to tell him, of all people. They'd all know, soon enough. Then his other hand was under her chin, forcing her to look at him. It'd be easier if he'd just hit her, the way Frog had done. A good pop in the mouth, that's what she deserved! "I'm going to detention," she said at last and it sounded maddeningly ordinary and everyday, like a trip to the store or the post office. Parker let go of her arm and slumped against the lockers. "I couldn't tell Simpson that, now could I?" Suddenly his posture enraged her. She was the one being devastated, not he.. "Look!" He sprang back to face her. "I thought you wanted graduation more than anything. Or was all that so much bullshit dredged up for my benefit? What about your grandmother? How could you do this to her?" Dyna hurried toward the exit, Parker striding along beside her, spouting righteousness like an Old Testament prophet. "Stop it!" she lashed out at him once they reached the parking lot. "You don't know anything!" "Then tell me! You're driving me crazy, can't you see that?" They stood there, facing each other, both miserable. "Come on, Dyna," He took her hand and led her to the clump of trees where he parked his truck every day. "Get in," he ordered. Then he was sitting beside her, waiting for her to say it wasn't true. "We don't have much time," she told him. "There's a cop picking me up at ten." It was true. She was going to detention. "I was arrested Saturday," Dyna began, avoiding his eyes. "What for?" "Frog, this guy I used to work for . . . he got busted, then he ratted on me. I corroborated his details and remembered a lot he'd forgotten. I was so scared," she clasped her hands in her lap to keep them from shaking, "but at the same time, I was glad to get it over with. You know what I mean?" She looked right at Parker now. "I finally got it off my head. You don't know what it's like . . . waiting and waiting. Then they haul you in and it's all inevitable. You can't get it out fast enough." Parker was confused. "But what happened? You and Frog . . . what'd you do?" |
