Show 42 Dyna grinned. Only two teachers had marked her absent that first day ! Who was she to dispute school records? "Where'd you go when you left the school?" "The smokers hit the gulley. Out back." "Yeah, I know about the gulley. Who was out there with you?" "A bunch of kids. I'm new at Bonneville, remember? I didn't know anyone." "You know their names now. Who was there who might have seen you?" Dyna did a quick survey of her six classes. Carol Diddredge smoked. So did Don Schmidt. Was Fowler going to question them? Not likely. "Carol Diddredge, I guess. She's a junior. But, you know, how can I be sure she was there that time?" "Who else?" He'd written down Carol's name. "Gol, wish I'd taken roll," Dyna clucked. The police officer didn't think that was funny. "How about Don Schmidt? Yeah, Don. Probably . . ." "You just automatically knew about the gulley, the first day?" "I asked this guy in the hall. You know how it goes. You see the bulge in his shirt pocket and he's throwing all his books in the locker. You know he's going somewhere for a drag." He made another note, pursed his lips, then swivelled back to look out the window again. It had started to rain. Gently at first, now it was whipping against the pane in gusts. For awhile they just sat there, both of them staring out the window. For sure Dyna wasn't going to open her mouth. She'd learned never to volunteer anything. She could sit there forever if that's what he wanted to do. "How'd you get here?" he said finally- The question took Dyna by surprise. "I walked." He leaned back, studying her, then he pushed her file aside and stood up. Dyna followed him across the room with her eyes. Is _it over? Is it really all over? God, I_ want to get out of here!
