Show 84 "Look, fill out one of these." Re handed her an application blank from under the counter* "You can bring it back* I'll call you if anything comes up." Dyna took the sheet and stuck it in her notebook* Fat chance. You know I, don't have a car. Wait'll you find out £ don't have a phone either. "Thanks," she smiled again* "I'll check back with you." "Okay, sure," he said, waving her away. "Kevin, you got that large combination ready? Mrs, Sanchez is here," Dyna walked out past Mrs. Sanchez and headed toward the park. The skies had darkened. Snow was falling again, the third time today* If she hurried she could stop to see Glub-Glub* Suddenly, with a pang, she remembered. The ducks wouldn't be there! It was too late. How had she forgotten? Every year she said goodbye to the ducks and granny goose, brought them a treat at the end of November and said goodbye. Cripesl This is what happens when you get to thinking you're _a big shot! Dyna zipped her parka up to her chin and hurried along the sidewalk* She'd go by the pond anyway* Maybe the Aviary was slow this year and the birds hadn't been moved inside* She knew she was kidding herself. The pond would be frozen over* The park was deserted when Dyna got there. The street lights were already on. Squirrel tracks which criss-crossed under the trees would be gone by morning* So would the kindergarten tracks, as Dyna called them, patterns made by small bodies with huge angel wings* Dyna stopped and reached up for a tree branch. It was like pulling the chain on the basement shower. One tug and kerpow! A big, soft bomb landed square on her face. Dyna laughed, wiped the snow out of her eyes, then ploughed on* Suddenly, looming out of the dusk, a brown van pulled to the curb alongside the pond* Dyna caught her breath. Frog! Was it Frog? She changed her course, veering off to the right. She wasn't going to the pond if he was there. She watched the van out of the corner of her eye. "Luhan Marshall," her mouth formed the name, tasting it like an oath. What does he want? The van started to move in reverse as Dyna neared the street that bisected the park. It was Frog, all right. And she'd thought he was in jaill Her first impulse was to run, but she fought it off. He's not gonna thug me. Just cool It and keep going. |
