Show 43 crying out loud! "Dispatch, 503," the officer said into his mike, not paying any attention to her. "I'll be en route to 931 South 5th East with one female passenger. Mileage: 43,2225." "Ten-four." The rest of the ride home was mostly an ordeal, with Mr. Personality whistling on and off key. Once he asked her if she liked being at Bonneville. Then he wanted to know how she got back and forth from downtown to the suburbs. At the house he got back on the mike. -In spite of herself, Dyna enjoyed the conversations with the dispatcher. It was just like on the TV, only it was real and she was the "female passenger." "Arrived at 931 South 5th East. Mileage is 43,223.4." Then the bored dispatcher came on again. "Ten-four. Your time is 1715, number 503." Dyna caught Officer Bruce Fowler looking at her to see if she was impressed. "You have to do all that to protect yourself from me?" she asked. He nodded and grinned. "You might get vicious and overpower me. Take my patrol car." Dyna hooted, deciding he wasn't so bad after all. Once inside, he dismissed her in the living room and went on into the kitchen where Gram was working on dinner. He needn't have bothered getting off in private that way. Sitting stiffly on the sofa, Dyna heard every word they said. Gram, too, swore that Dyna had been in school from the very first day. "I can't believe the change in her," Gram went on. "She's having a big time out there at Bonneville High School. She's studying, bringing her books home. Until this week-" Don't say any more, Gram, Dyna begged, don't give me away! Then Dyna heard her grandmother lay down the paring knife and fill a pan with water. Good old Gram! Unflappable Lillian Suggs! Even Detective Fowler couldn't halt her dinner preparations! They talked awhile longer, the detective explaining how they had to follow whatever leads they had, even if they didn't come up with anything. Finally, he was ready to leave, but being a great hand-shaker, apparently, he had to walk over t© the sofa on his way out and shake hers once more. |
