Show 38 how Dyna didn't fit in at Bonneville and what was she doing here in the first place, she let it drop that she'd seen Dyna's transfer papers." "You mean that stuff isn't confidential?" Parker asked. "I. thought it was, except she had to carry the zeroxes in to Mrs. Burns. She says Dyna was expelled from Central High and has a police record besides*" Parker felt his face redden. "So you're going to spread the word around, huh?" he asked sarcastically. "Of course not! Parker!" The bell rang, but Jan's dark eyes were blazing. "You sit right bj, her," she said, "and Dyna always talks to you. I just thought you should know. Like today . . . I feel sorry for her, you know?" She picked up her books, still in a huff. "How come I'm the one who always gets to play defender, huh?" "I guess because you're good at it." Jan stalked off to her own table, leaving him wishing he hadn't been such a smartass. "Hey," he called after her, "thanks." For what? he wondered, suddenly gloomy. He knew Dyna was different from the rest of them, that her background was a far cry from his own. But he didn't want her to be that different. Was there really a police record? What had she done? He could have gone on all year without knowing that. Maybe Amy was mistaken. How could she be talking about his Dyna, the crazy clown-girl who made him laugh every morning whether he felt like it or not2 He remembered how she'd once drawn a caricature of his sour puss on the back of his hand that he'd chuckled over all day long. Besides, Dyna had depths in her eyes that he liked. He wasn't sure he was going to believe what Jan told him. If he had to choose, he'd take Dyna over Amy any day-Amy, who had about as much warmth as a porcelain doll. Dyna, at least, was real! Parker opened his workbook, vaguely aware that his lab partner was sitting there next to him, busily taking down Mr. Bidwell's instructions. For some reason, today's experiment didn't interest Parker at all. |
