Show Acknowledgments I would like to thank first my advisor, Gary Lindstrom for his patient support of my work. His output of ideas continues to astonish me, and his ability to understand new concepts deeply and quickly has made my work much easier. The other members of my committee, Bob Keller and Bob Kessler, have likewise been very generous in their support and their acceptance of my ideas. I have profited from discussions with Adrzej Ciepielewski Ross Overbeek , and Manuel Hermenegildo about their work. AI Despain and Peter Van Roy were very generous in making the source code for the PLM compiler available to me. Many BBN employees helped me with technical questions about the Butterlly; among those who contributed most were Walter Milliken and Bruce Moxon. My good friend and companion Kathy Igo has been a constant safe haven for me during my last two years of graduate work. During the difficult times of doubt and frustration all graduate students endure, she has uplifted, sustained and encouraged me. I am and will always be proud that I have been a BuckleBuster. The pleasure of sharing travel, food, adventure, and the world's best music with Lewis Downey, Richard McClane, and Tom Smart is indescribable and has helped make my time in Utah memorable and enjoyable. Through many long days and nights of work, I have been fortunate to have the understanding companionship of Ashok Samal, Lal George, and Chuck Hansen. Their ideas and encouragement have kept me from losing hope at times when my frustrations threatened to overcome me. Finally, I owe a debt I can never repay to Mana Swartz, M.D. of the University of Utah's Department of Ophthalmology. Without his generosity, in a very real s ense I would never have seen the conclusion of this work.
