| Abstract |
Mr. Zucker (b. 1895) discusses the emigration of his parents from Poland, their life in Philadelphia, and political leanings. He recalls his education in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, his move to Salt Lake City to join the English faculty at the University of Utah, and life in the Jewish community. Also included are stories of various Jewish families, his experiences teaching Sunday school, the Maimonides, Jewish students and faculty at the University in the 1930s and 1940s, Jewish politics and culture, and the life of Judge Herbert Schiller. |

Show LOUIS ZUCKER #2 Then "Kricky" gets up at this Hanukkah program. I remember afterwards Sam Cardon i n a genial way made fun of "Kricky". He quoted "Kricky", "Thees leettle candles, 11 and I thought to myself, "You can't hold a candle to that man," you know. Well, there was the accent, but every sent ence carried weight. After we heard all he said, i t was appropriate and really gripped me. Here I am digressing. What was the mainstream I digressed from? I have covered my teaching career, my career as educator at the Montefiore. I was pleased to have that assignment. I felt honored to have it. As I said, I tried my best. I did not achieve any astonishing results. Frequently, a teacher can only say, "I did not do any harm. Maybe I did a little good. Maybe I benefitted some, and hurt nobody." HR: When did you stop? When Rabbi Cardon came in as rabbi, was that the year you stopped being principal? LZ: Yes. HR: Well now, you see--. LZ: In the middle 1940s. 1946-47, something like that. HR: Okay. I was confirmed in 1950, and you did come in for a little while and taught our class. LZ: I did? HR: Yes. LZ: Then maybe I was asked to come in and help out for a few 83 |
