Show Joel Shapir o 6/9/22 tp 1 pg 19 I t's a very important fun ction in the army . l \vh at d i d you d o? J S I was a general ' outfielder ', as they say . I did--I ended up dcing a little typing . But , I helped the interrogators . There were two J ewish boys there , Gerrran , Jewish boys, by the wa y , whom I became fond of . And they were superb interrogators . And I used to help them, and I dia everything . L Ie scribe for me what interrogation might have been . JS Wh.at is interrogation? You sit down , you have a Gerrran prisoner , and you ask him questions , and he answers in the usual Gene v a Con venti on wa y , " P'•Y name is so and so , my serial number is so and so ." We say , "Fine , we ' ve got that out of the way . Now , I ' m going t o ask you something else . " And you keep on asking q uestions . And , military prisoners answer questions ; they ' re not supposed to , but they do . Ana , generally , without any particular d uress . I never saw , in my experiences , any kind of duress or threa t ening of a German military pris oner . Nor did I ever see one tha t declined to an swer anything . Th i s included officer s , and so on . Now, the higher the rank the officer , the --you might have some difficult y . But , these two German boys --one of them ,particularly , was absol utely superb . He would begin to show these officer s pictures fro!Ti Life j\'.aga zine , and all kinas of stuff . He would let them go on and t alk about t~e glories of the Third Reich , the nobility of their purpose , and the commitment as soldiers . He accepted all of that . And then he would attack them point by point by point , to show them t hat all those noble ideas and ideals and precepts had , indeed , been undercut . L What would he attack them on? JS On the mor al pr inciple . He would show them the decay in the army , the disloyalty in the army . It would appear , from what I saw , at least most of these people , at least on the western front fightin g , we r e not aware of the genocidal activities. They were not that clearly aware of it, and when they were confronted with them, most of them were pretty upset . L Would these German , Jewish interrogators ever bring that up? Did they know? JS Oh , yes , we had pictures from Life Magazine, because as things began --we had all kinds of information. |
