People today wh o reme~ber my father speak to me of him , even in the non-Jewish community, and there is a consistent thread -- "your father was a gentleman". "Your father was a kind man. He never spoke an unkind word to anybody." " He always thanked those who served him." He always left a larger tip than he could afford. He was very typical of that kind of person. And no waitress ever found him wanting. He never complained about what was given him. 1 Was your mother's personality more aggressive? JS Well, my mother's personality was more of that American model. As I say, had she been alive today, she would have been in the forefront of the feminists. She would be that kind of a person. But , the roads open to women, certainly in this city in her time, and in the power of her younger years, were not that many, because, again, the pervasive model. I'm sure had she lived in a larger city, another city, her impact would have been greater. But, again, you had woman under the pervasiveness of the Mormon model who were in the social services. I mean, that was really the expression then,if not the one desired today, from the Mormon model, if you seek to do it. And, again, there's no question it impacted against those abilities. I don't think you would have seen women in those days in the political swim. Certainly not the minority women. There were no Greeks, Italians, or Jewish women running for legislature, I can assure you. But, certainly, my mother would have been that kind of person in this setting or in, perhaps , another place. 1 Do you ever remember your mother regretting the fact that she lived in this town because the opportunities were so small? JS She may have made things like that, because I would say only she would often encourage me,as I was growing up, and got toward older years, to find a way in life other than that which my father was doing. That is to say , this business. And she would not have been displeased had I founa some enterprise or interest that would take me away from the city. She spoke to me in those ways, so if that |
