Did she have the chance to actually educate? She was trained to teach? JS Yes, but she did not ever teach . As I said, she would get involved in social activities in the city ; take the disadvantaged , all kinds of things -- aid to new Americans . L W.~ at did your mother look like? JS f·'iy mother was a dark , auburn haired woman. fv1y mother was a pretty good looking gal . Auburn hair-- not red, but auburn. F·ull bosomed. Wa s very well kept, very erect. My mother would always yell at me to stand up straight. She stood up straight. Tummy tucked in. Well, she did her own hair, because during the depression my father generated very few dollars. My mother was a good housekeeper. Served good, simple, wholesome food. Never threw out the water from the peas and beans; it ended up in the soup. Unadorned food. Simple , good version food. I'm sure her good,healthy fare, healthful fare, contributed to my father's long life. The kitchen floor, every Friday night, was covered with newspapers, which was, oddly enough, European values. L Do you mean covered the floor? JS Yeah , for shabbus. Covered the floor,and maybe it'd stay there Sunday . So , she integrated some of the--in those days, when you scrubbed the linoleum on the kitchen floor, you always put newspaper down. I've talked to others who reme mber that. A contemporary habit. And of course, as soon as you went into the kitchen for a glass of water, you'd kick. these newspapers around. I used to walk on it carefully to avoid kicking them around too soon, because that's what I was instructed to do. L I think this might be a good place to stop right now. I'd like to arrange a time to come back. You've been very frank. Thank you very much. I truly do appreciate it. There have been a couple of people who have been as open as you, but not many. JS Well, I think if you want to · touch again, because I think what you really haven't gotten out of rne,as far as the 20's and 30's, .are the aspects of Jewish education.
