JS I couldn't say yes or no on that , I don ' t think so , because I rarely went to the west side, unless it was to take a date home or a girl home. The west side was the other side , the other side of the tracks, literally . L Now, you've sort of anticipated my next ~uestion . WhD d id you go out with? JS Well, as a boy, as a high school person , I didn't date a great deal . l was a single child, a bit on the shy side •• more than a bit , perhaps . ~ I didn't date very much, I was very active school person . I was very prominent in high school activities . L Which kind? Scholastic? JS Scholastic: news paper, journalism, year book , politics . I was an officer of the Boy ' s Association . JV1anned the newspaper t o a la r ge degree, took photographs for the year book , managed the oper etta . I was an up fron t p~rson. Based on , I guess , initially , on academic excellence . I spoke for the -- we didn ' t have a valedictor ian , but we had speakers at commencement , and I ran the high school commence ment with the principle speaker . 1 You make small of it. JS I make small of it,because, I think , at that time , a lot of con temporaries of mine were very bright kids . We were , again , r eflecting the 30's if •••• 1 Were you in East High? JS Yes, in East High. Reflecting the 30's, again, from the temple side of it , at least , maybe not only from the temple, on both sides , it was very visible to the parents at that time, I'm sure, that, again , the key to suc cess in America was academic excellence. Learning was still the big thing. And when there were lists of achievers put out in the newspapers, you know, there were always Jewish kids . And as far as I -- when I was a tyke, you could talk about this one and this one, and (find) his name in the paper, saying he won this scholarship, he won that scholarship. So, scholarship , whatever level , was still number one in admiration. And parents of Reform or Conserv- |
