Show Joel Shapiro 6/9/82 tp pg 17 actually, I carried a card saying as such. The actual physical induction, from which there is no going home again, occurred right here in Salt Lake City. I swore in twice. l swore in, myself, twice. L After induction in Salt Lake, where did you go? vS I went to Fort Benning, Georgia, for 3 or 4 months, and then overseas . L 'vfhat happened in Georgia? JS I was in Infantry Officers Training School . I was trained to- - what was I trained to do? I was trained to operate every contrivance in the infantry division . Zvery weapon . I was trained , as a good soldier , to use a bayonet . Trained to be an officer in the infantry . And I got thrown out 4 days before graduation for overstaying a pass . But , that ' s a minor story . ( l aughs) L Where did you get shipped out to? JS I went from here to Louisiana maneuvers for about 4 weeks , and then I did volunteer to go overseas , as a matter of fact . And then l went overseas , to Northern Ireland and a training group . L 'l/hy volunteer? JS I got sick and tired of digging fox holes in the wet mud of Louisiana . It became obnoxious , and anything seemed like a better deal . And , very frankly , I was not happy . I went through a shock period after being tossed out of what I had been preparing for for 4 years . I got thrown out of Officer's School for overstaying a pass on Hew Years Eve . The class graduated on January 4th , and on December 31st I didn ' t get back on time. I got home the next day , and I had the hearing , and was dismissed, somehow. L ~as that the usual thing to do? JS Oh , yes . You ' ve never been in the army, I take it. It's not like your mother . L After that amount of time ••• JS Well , it was a great financial waste poured on a charming, young man . Is that what you ' re trying to say? You don't find it efficient Well , you've never been in the army. L True . JS There a.re no mistakes .
