| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

L K Well,It hink fuey were very different because - the Sephardic tended to associated thesmelves~ch more with the upper classes of Spain. RA Well, you know what happened to them. LK Well I know ultimate-- RA They w:re just annihlated and drive out. LK Some of them were annihilated and driven out. Some of them converted. RA Well, well, that-- that- we don't talk about [conversion] LK They becamse, someof them, Marranos. RA Theycould not be Jewish and stay there. Do you know that LK RA in Cleveland when I was grwoing up, there were no Jewish children that ever elected to take Spanish in Schools because of what ha~p3~d to the Jews in Spain. Of course, fuey got over that. Theyt oak spanish now. I'm sure. But even at the time I graduated high school, this was a no-no, for any Jewish child-never took spanish. You took French, you took Latin. Those were your choice.s I remember I didn't want to take Latin for the same reason. Because LAtin is assoicated with Catholicism. OH. Well you see like in my home. They wre Romanians. And the ROmanian tongue comes fro be latin lanuge . My brother took Latin in school and my folks used to like to speak Romanian when when they woulnd't want us to understand what they were saying. But once my brother ~as in Junior High, andhe took Latin, he couldge get a smattering of it, if they spoke Romanian, |
