| Abstract |
Interviewed by Leslie Kelen, Rose Leibowitz (b. 1908) talks about her parents' lives in Rumania, their coming to America, her father's experiences in the egg and grocery businesses, her childhood, and Jewish rituals practiced in the home. She also remembers her involvement in various organizations in Salt Lake City, including the Talmud Torah ladies, B'nai B'rith, the Traveler's Aid Society, United Way, the Welfare Fund drive, and the Jewish Relief Society (which became the Jewish Family Service). Other topics covered include the differences between the B'nai Israel and Montefiore congregations, the social "clique-isness" of the women in the Jewish community, Rabbi Cardin, the high holy days, some of the people who were "bulwarks" of the Montefiore Congregation, and Zionism. She also recalls some of the locl scandals, the anit-Semitic situation in Salt Lake schools, and the younger generation of Jewish people moving away from Salt Lake. Finally, she speaks of her involvement in Hadassah, Youth Alleyah, fund raising, blue box luncheons, USO, the Jewish Relief Society, and help Jewish soldiers during World War II. 177 pages. |

Show OHI Rose Arnowitz 4-14-83 sl:l4 that on Yom Kippur, he used tohave m _____ , you know, he came from a family wherehe knew his way around on the pulpit and knew all that -And he would give quite a bit of money for the honor of having that. Rabbi Cardin was still here and the directive came from here that nobody comes up to the pulpit who is married to a non-Jew. And fuat went for Joe Dupler- he didn't care. He didn't care if he withdrew his financial support or not. Well, the men who would- Abe Guss and Sam Bernstein, who is, you know, quite ill now. They used tobe the ones in charge of going ~t and passing out the alliyahs, you know you're going go up here andyou're -going pphere and you're going to go up through there. And they had the little tickets made out. Now, Joe Dupler used tohave a habit of - you know, he had big fur store here. And hewould not be there at 9 oclock in the oorning, when services started .He would like to have - - it was two or three years after he was married, they kept giving him different excuses. "You came in too late; we didn't know you were coming; we gave it to somebody else. " Finally, they had to come out and tell him. And, he gotupset about it but he didn't withdraw his support. But he never had a up there again not while Cardin was there. Nobody was left - allowed o the pulpit who was married to a non-Jew. LK Sohe just did not bend at all. |
